If you are a kid who loves books, then Byron Writers Festival’s ‘Kids Big Day Out’ is the ultimate event for you. It kicks off at 8.30am Sunday 5 August with Spaghetti Circus roving performers, the prelude to a jam-packed day of entertainment that will set young imaginations on fire.
The main program will see one marquee transform into a giant immersive storytelling arena with host Master Showman, Shep Huntly. Kids and Young Adult authors and illustrators will take to the stage to give a behind-the-scenes insight into their creative process and what has inspired their books. These interactive presentations are extremely popular entertainment for kids and parents alike.
Meet local duo Misa Alexander and Erin Knutt (Fergus and Delilah), music maker Eddie Ayres (Sonam and the Silence), hero maker Oliver Phommavanh (Super Con-Nerd and Natural Born Leader Loser), joke maker Matt Stanton (Funny Kid series), The Chaser’s Andrew Hansen and Jessica Roberts (Bab Sharkey and the Animal Mummies series) and fantasy maker Lian Tanner (Rogue and Hidden series).
‘Meet the Author’ book signings will follow each session. Books will be on sale at The Book Room Collective or bring along your childrens’ well-loved copies for their heroes to sign, and make them even more special.
In addition kids can explore the StoryBoard StorySpace; the famous StoryBoard bus and tipi village comes alive with free drop-in workshops for aspiring young writers. Participants can create their own hand-sewn book in Book Making with Zanni Louise or pop on some headphones and listen to the StoryBoard participants’ original podcast series, as well as Fierce Girls podcasts by ABC’s Samantha Turnbull. Story Sleuth’s will sniff out some cracking good character clues with Tristan Bancks, and for the crafty cats there will be box character drawing, based on Misa Alexander’s and Erin Knutt’s pictorially gorgeous tale of diversity Fergus and Delilah.
Kids Big Day Out tickets are $40/$60/$80 (for 1/2/3 children with 1 accompanying adult).
