The Board serves to guide and support the myriad activities of Byron Writers Festival. Their skills and passions underpin the success of Australia’s largest regional writers’ festival.

Chair

Courtney Miller

Courtney Miller has a varied career across politics, art and fashion and currently heads up a philanthropic foundation focused on the next generation.

Treasurer

Cheryl Bourne

Cheryl Bourne is a Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA) and has been an avid supporter of Byron Writers Festival since its inception. She holds the position of Treasurer on the Festival board.

Secretary

Hilarie Dunn

Hilarie Dunn is a marketing and communication practitioner who has worked for many years in the corporate and education sectors. Since moving to the Northern Rivers in 2017 she has shifted career focus to her long-held interest in the arts, in particular the Byron Writers Festival.

Lynda Hawryluk

Dr Lynda Hawryluk has been the Southern Cross University representative on the Festival board since 2013. She is a Senior Lecturer in Writing at SCU, and Course Coordinator of the Associate Degree of Creative Writing.

Marele Day

Marele Day is a best-selling, award-winning author of international acclaim who joined the Festival board in 2000.

Lynda Dean OAM

Lynda Dean has been on the Byron Writers Festival board since 1995. She has run businesses in the natural health industry including Thursday Plantation and Organic India while being active in a wide range of community development projects.

Grace Lucas-Pennington

Grace is an Aboriginal (Bundjalung) editor specialising in fiction and poetry. Grace also works in the Australian publishing industry as a creative consultant, peer assessor, guest lecturer, and industry advisor.

Sarah Armstrong

Sarah Armstrong has been a member of Byron Writers Festival (then the Northern Rivers Writers Centre) since 1999. She’s an award-winning former ABC journalist, novelist for adults and children, and writing teacher.

In Memorium

Jesse Blackadder

Dr Jesse Blackadder was an international award-winning author of fiction and served on the Byron Writers Festival board from 2011 until her death in June 2020. We will miss her dearly.
